Typically, the duties of a research associate include:

  1. Prepare drawings and maps synthesizing information about existing landscape conditions.
  2. Participate in field-based research in project landscapes.
  3. Participate in design workshops with stakeholders and multi-university project teams.
  4. Advance infrastructure design concepts through research-by-design.
  5. Help build, run, and maintain simple physical and numerical hydrodynamic and geomorphological models.
  6. Produce representations of infrastructure design concepts.
  7. Review scientific literature and key documents related to study landscapes.
  8. Document results of research-by-design and assist in report preparation.
  9. Assist in coordinating work within LIDL and across multi-university project teams.
  10. Participate in project team meetings and other stakeholder interactions.
  11. May prepare research results for publication or presentation at conferences.
  12. May help maintain project budgets.

Minimum qualifications include:

  1. Candidates must evidence a sophisticated approach to design, grounded in the integration of aesthetic, cultural, and ecological dimensions of landscape. This approach may include but must not be limited to strictly quantifiable measures of landscape performance.
  2. The candidate should be willing to learn basic physical and numerical modeling methods.
  3. The successful candidate will demonstrate commitment to the timely completion of deliverables and strong potential to work collaboratively with both a large research team and diverse stakeholders.
  4. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills are required.

Summer Internships

We are currently accepting applications for summer interns to work with the Landscape Infrastructure Design Lab.

Interns should be available to work 10-12 weeks between the end of the Spring 2025 semester and the start of the Fall 2025 semester. Interns will be paid on an hourly basis and typically work a standard work week (40 hours/week) in-person with the LIDL team at the CADC Research Commons.

Minimum qualifications include:

  1. Basic understanding of standard landscape architectural software, including Rhino and Adobe CS.
  2. Evidence of excellence in landscape architectural representation.
  3. Evidence of emerging competency in landscape architectural design processes.
  4. Strong interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to working generously within a collaborative team.

Typical work tasks will include:

  1. Prepare drawings and maps to understand coastal landscapes.
  2. Make drawings, models, and renderings to advance the team’s iterative design process.
  3. Help set up, monitor, and document simple physical hydrodynamic model runs in the geomorphology table in our lab.
  4. Participate in fieldwork and design workshops with the LIDL team and its partners.

To apply, email work samples (or a portfolio) and your resume to LIDL director Rob Holmes [rbh0012@auburn.edu] by 28 February 2025.
